Smokeless Tobacco
The Dangers of Smokeless Tobacco
Smokeless tobacco goes by many names. Chew, dip, snuff, chaw or whatever you want to call it is dangerous and addictive. Users pinch the tobacco from a pouch or can and place it between their lip and gum. The nicotine is absorbed through the mouth, and the juice is spit out.
Many people, especially youth, falsely believe smokeless tobacco is safer than smoking. This is far from the truth.
Stronger, Not Safer
Smokeless tobacco contains three times more nicotine than a cigarette. That makes it:
- More addictive
- Harder to quit
- More likely to lead to cigarette smoking later in life
This isn’t a “better” choice. It’s just another way to get hooked.
Serious Health Risks
Smokeless tobacco contains at least 28 cancer-causing chemicals.1 Over time, these chemicals can lead to:
- Leukoplakia – white patches in the mouth that often lead to cancer
- Mouth, throat and pancreatic cancer
- Gum disease, tooth loss and receding gums
- Tooth decay and bad breath
- Reproductive health issues in males, including lower sperm count and abnormal sperm cells
Bottom Line: Smokeless Tobacco Comes With Risks
There’s no safe way to use tobacco. If you or someone you know is using smokeless tobacco, or thinking about starting, know the truth: It’s not the safer option. It’s just another way the tobacco industry tries to sell addiction — especially to young people.
